I thought Dialogue Network people might be interested in this short article “People think they are much better at understanding others than they actually are – new research“. The findings are as applicable to the divide between those from a different religion or belief background as those from different political perspectives. 

Essentially: we make the assumption that those we class as an “out group” have homogeneous views. For example, in the US (where the work was done): if you see someone who is on the Right on immigration you’re likely to be pretty sure they’re on the Right on abortion. In this sample, that was usually wrong, but awareness of the tendency to make the mistake can help avoid it.
