1995 –

The murder trial of OJ Simpson started.

The summer of 1995 was a difficult one. I had a disagreement with the leadership of the KFA and decided to hand in my notice. They wanted me to return to the Boys Upper and I didn’t want to do that.

I applied and got the post of Deputy Head of Science at The Westgate School near Slough.

The Head of science who interviewed me and eventually offered me the post ended up resigning for personal reasons and not coming back to the new term!

A new Head of Science was appointed, I believe at the start of the Spring Term. By that stage I felt this wasn’t the right school for me and I had already decided to hand in my notice even though I didn’t have a job to go to.

We had bought our first house and had spent a lot of money, time and effort into fixing it and making major alterations to it all the way up into the loft. An income was essential for us but still, the travel around the M25 and along the M4 was very tiring and the school was a very testing environment after the KFA Girls Upper. Not having A Level Physics or even a high level GCSE to teach was another factor that made me decide not to stay beyond that first year at that School.

In the meantime I looked at and applied for a post at my old school, Wood Green School (was by this time called White Hart Lane School). This application was unsuccessful. The husband of the Head at Westgate just happened to be a governor at WHL school. That didn’t help as I hadn’t made it clear I was applying elsewhere, so soon after joining Westgate…

I then attended two interviews on the same day at two small schools for a Head of Science post. One was Haresfoot school, an MLD school and the other was The Purcell School in Harrow on the Hill, a specialist a music school.

I liked both schools, for different reasons but I really liked the Purcell School more and it was also closer to our home in Enfield. After the nightmare travels from Enfield to Slough for a year I really wanted a job much closer to home.
